Question:
My dr. has perscribed Paxil 20mg. for my depression. It’s the first time in my life I have taken an antidepressant and I have alot of questions. My doctor filled me in on all the standard stuff, but I would like some firsthand experience answers. I have only been on the medication for 4 days but I am noticing a few changes: not worring as much, a little more ambition. I am wondering whether this could be the medication or just a placibo effect because I am finally doing something. The changes are not dramatic, just a little inkling of an idea in the back of my mind that things may be getting better. Secondly, I had a tremendous headache yesterday and a dry mouth. The headache went away with a couple ibuprophin, but the dry mouth is still with me. Has anyone had this experience? I have a loss of appetite because of some slight nasuea, but that rights itself after a couple of crackers. Other than that I’m starting to notice that the sun is shining today and the sky is that crayola color of "sky blue". Maybe I’ll go outside today. Kim Cairns
Response:
I would recommend that you read a copy of "Undoing Depression". It had a lot of answers for me. By the way, I am on Effexor XR and have been for five weeks now. I was prescribed it since having a breakdown. My first time too. — John T. May Don’t sweat the small stuff…

Hi I have been on Paxil for over a year, and it made a world of difference in my life. The dry mouth is a side effect I am afraid. I think it’s minor compared to the depression. I suck on starlight mints or chew gum. Good Luck, sounds like you are on your way!!!!

Both. While Paxil takes 4-6 weeks to take full effect the sense of wellness that you are getting from the placibo effect is getting you to become more active, the endorphine effect. > Secondly, I had a tremendous headache yesterday and a dry mouth. Headaches are an early side effect that will go away. Dry mouth appears to be standard with any antidepressant. > I have a loss of appetite because of some slight nasuea, but that > rights itself after a couple of crackers. > Other than that I’m starting to notice that the sun is shining today > and the sky is that crayola color of "sky blue". I’ve experienced many side effects to Paxil. Try sleeping with water next to the bed. It helps a little. Victoria
