Question:

Effexor made me hypomanic after only a few days and I quit taking it after a week as it was increasing anxiety and irritability.

Effexor XR had been a nightmare for me!  It did nothing for my depression, while making me irritable and physically sick the whole time I took it.  But once you try to get off of it is when you experience the worst of what Effexor has to offer.  I’ve been trying to get off it for over two weeks and have been extremely sick for the majority of it.  Withdrawal from Effexor is absolutely awful.  My advice would be to stay away from this drug because even if it had helped my depression, this withdrawal is bad enough to cancel out any positives.  Also, because of the short half life, you get these withdrawal symptoms even if you’re just a few hours late with your dose.  Do a search on the web under Effexor withdrawal, you’ll pull up tons of sites with personal stories that should help you make your decision.  Good luck!

Hi Mary Kay,     I have been of Effexor for years.  First the regular type, then the XR. For me, Effexor XR has worked pretty well with few side effects.  Mind you I had a couple of years to get over the side effects before starting XR.  The symptoms you have if you forget to take a does are very unpleasant, but the XR has mitigated this problem.  There also seems to be some amelioration of OCD although that is not what Effexor is designed to do.
