    Question:

I’m on depakote, and I split my doses in the morning at night. If I do all of them at night, I’m so tired the next day. So splitting them should help, but make sure your p-doc okays what you are doing and knows. The depakote definitely helps, but can cause you to be more depressed, so make sure you have the right level of anti-depressant. I’m on 750 mg of Depakote (2 at night, one in morning) and effexor. I agree about the effect of effexor, b/c when I played with my meds and didn’t take the right amt of depakote, I was flying high. If you still feel sluggish from depakote, let your pdoc know immediately, don’t play with your meds like I did. Hang in there! Alex

Hi Alex, > I’m on depakote, and I split my doses in the morning at night. If I do all > of them at night, I’m so tired the next day.

Yes…that can happen. >So splitting them should help, but make sure your p-doc okays what you >are doing and knows. Is that working well for you? > I agree about the effect of effexor, b/c when I played with my meds and > didn’t take the right amt of depakote, I was flying high.

I cannot take any of the ADs as they trigger a dydhoric mania but the Neurontin and Lamictal combo appears to be working for me. > If you still feel sluggish from depakote, let your pdoc know immediately, > don’t play with your meds like I did.

Isn’t it tempting to mess around with our meds sometimes with wanton abandon? Doesn’t make good sense <sigh> but now I consult with my pdoc when I think a med adjustment is warranted. How are you doing???? Peace, — I am NOT a Doctor!

Hi group(s): I am a 30 year old male new to the BPII diagnosis with mixed depression/anxiety.(whatever the heck that maeans!!:-) Well..I was having some problems with my meds. See, I was originally diganosed unipolar depressive, but I still had moments of horrible mania and dysphoria. So, my pdoc kep’t me on my Effexor and Klonipin, and added 125mg of Depakote 2x a day. Well…that didn’t seem to help much. I had a really bad week. I did something I MAY regret (I was definately in my "mania" state). I had sex with a stranger without a condom, and she wasn’t on birth control. Now, I had asked her, but she said at first she WAS….and then I found out she has many mental problems of her own. I think she was trying to "trap" me into getting her pregnant. It was one night..and I MAY have gotten lucky and she DIDN’T get pregnant. The thing is…I went back for a second night. So, two day’s ago, because of this, I nearly had a major breakdown. I was just so scarred, and felt so uncontrolable. I went to the hospital, and my pdoc was kind enough to see me right away. First thing he did, was take me off the Effexor…he believed it was causing to much mania and "blind" thinking. Then, he upped my dose of Depakote to 500mg 2x a day…and that may go up to three. Today is my first day on that dose. Then, he added 1 mg of Klonipin at bedtime. He said we may try other mood stablizers if needed. Now, today, I took my dose of 500mg around noon, and I feel just fine. ALot of my "manic feelings" have subsided.(I know..it’s early.) I also took a tylenaol with codeine to help ease some of the tension in my neck.(just a little bit of tylenol.) My question is around the timing of the Depakote. Should I take the one 500mg around noon, and the other at bedtime with my klonipin??? My pdoc said the Depakot would also help normalize my sleep schedule. I just don’t want it making me sleepy in the daytime. Any hlp would be appreciated…and please post to the group, as I prefer answering in the newsgroup better. Thanks very much…you guys seem like a really kind bunch of people…and this BP is worse then anything…going up..comming down..miserable and grouchy then high as a kite. Yuk. Thanks again.. Alan L.
